About this worksheet

This printable resource focuses on one clear learning skill so students can practise independently or with adult support.

Learning focus

Use the worksheet for targeted practice, revision, homework, tutoring or homeschool learning. Review student responses and revisit the skill where needed.

12-Hour and 24-Hour Time

12-hour time uses a.m. and p.m., while 24-hour time uses numbers from 00 to 23 for the hours of the day. Converting between the two systems is easier when you first identify the hour and whether it is before or after midday.

Try This Strategy

  1. Identify the hour and minutes.
  2. For afternoon and evening times, add 12 to the 12-hour hour when converting to 24-hour time.
  3. For 24-hour times from 13:00 to 23:59, subtract 12 from the hour and use p.m.
  4. Check that the minutes stay the same.

Quick Self-Check

Say the same time in both formats and explain why the hour changes.
