Area and perimeter are different

Perimeter measures the distance around a shape, while area measures the space inside it. Keeping these two ideas separate helps students choose the correct operation.

A reliable method

  1. Decide whether the question asks for the boundary or the inside space.
  2. For perimeter, add the side lengths around the shape.
  3. For area of a rectangle, multiply length by width when those measurements are given.
  4. Check that the units make sense for the quantity being measured.
