Finding Missing Numbers

Missing-number tasks build understanding of number order and patterns. Ask children to look at the numbers before and after the gap rather than guessing.

A Simple Strategy

  1. Read the numbers from left to right.
  2. Notice how much the numbers increase or decrease.
  3. Use the known numbers to work out the missing value.
  4. Count through the sequence to check the answer.

Try starting from different numbers and counting forwards or backwards to strengthen number fluency.
