Recognising Rhyming Words

Rhyming words have the same or similar ending sound. Focus on how the words sound rather than whether their spellings look the same.

Rhyming Check

  1. Say both words aloud.
  2. Listen to the ending sounds.
  3. Ignore the beginning sound when comparing the rhyme.
  4. Decide whether the words rhyme.

Clap the final sound pattern or say the pair several times to make the rhyme easier to hear.
