Short Vowel a

The short a sound appears in many early CVC words. Hearing the middle sound helps children choose the correct vowel when reading and spelling.

Blend and Segment

  1. Say the word slowly.
  2. Listen for the middle vowel sound.
  3. Match the sound to the letter a.
  4. Blend the sounds to read the whole word.

After reading a word, spell it aloud sound by sound and check that the vowel is in the middle position.
