Adding Within 100

When adding two numbers within 100, children can use place value to work with tens and ones. Breaking numbers apart can make the calculation easier to explain.

Place-Value Strategy

  1. Separate each number into tens and ones.
  2. Add the tens.
  3. Add the ones.
  4. Combine the parts and check the total.

Use a number line, blocks or a written strategy when needed. Explain how you know the answer is reasonable.
