Understanding Division as Equal Sharing

Early division can be understood by sharing a collection fairly. If 12 counters are shared between 3 groups, each group should receive the same number. The equal groups help students see what the division number sentence represents.

Try This Strategy

  1. Draw or collect the total number of objects.
  2. Make the required number of equal groups.
  3. Share one object at a time until none remain.
  4. Count each group and record the division sentence.

Quick Self-Check

Check that every group has the same number. If the groups are not equal, the sharing needs to be repeated.
