Building a Clear Recount

A recount retells events in the order they happened. A strong personal recount helps the reader follow what happened first, next and finally, while adding a few details about important moments.

Plan Before Writing

  1. Choose the school-day event you want to recount.
  2. List three or four important moments in time order.
  3. Add time words such as first, then, next and finally.
  4. Reread each sentence and add a detail where the reader needs more information.

Quick Self-Check

Could another person follow your day without asking what happened next? If not, add a time word or missing event.
