About This Worksheet

Compound words are formed when two smaller words join to make a new word. This activity helps Year 2 students see the parts inside familiar words and use those parts to support spelling and vocabulary.

What Students Practise

Children identify the two base words in a compound and combine them correctly. Examples include sun + flower = sunflower, rain + bow = rainbow and foot + ball = football.

How to Use It

Say a compound word and ask children to identify its two smaller words. Write the parts separately, blend them together and discuss the new meaning. Then complete the worksheet and encourage students to create another compound word of their own.

Parent Tip

Play a quick compound-word game at home. Say one word such as “rain” and see if your child can add another word to make a familiar compound. Let them draw the two parts as well as write them.
