Strategies for Subtracting Within 100

Two-digit subtraction is easier when students use place value. Think about the tens and ones separately, or use a number line to count backwards. Choosing a strategy that can be explained is more useful than relying on a single method.

Try This Strategy

Identify the tens and ones in both numbers.

Subtract the tens first when that makes the calculation easier.

Subtract the remaining ones.

Estimate or use the inverse addition fact to check the answer.
