Checking Commonly Misspelled Words

Accurate spelling improves when students notice patterns, remember tricky parts and check their own writing. Instead of repeatedly copying a word, break it into manageable parts and use it in context.

A Practical Spelling Routine

  1. Look carefully at the word.
  2. Say it and identify the sounds or word parts.
  3. Cover it and write it from memory.
  4. Reveal the model and compare each part.
  5. Use the word in a sentence and proofread it again.

Build a Personal Tricky-Word List

Record words that are often misspelled and highlight the part that causes difficulty. Grouping words by a shared pattern can make them easier to remember.

Editing Tip

During proofreading, read slowly and check one feature at a time: spelling, capitals, punctuation and word choice. Correct the word, then reread the whole sentence to make sure it still makes sense.
